Conversation with – Texas Democratic Party Staff Leadership – Rose Clouston, Director of Voter Protection, and Hannah Howell, Director of Voter Registration

Rose Clouston has been the Texas Democratic Party’s Voter Protection Director since 2020. She leads the organization’s efforts to educate, empower and support voters as they navigate Texas’s repressive voting laws – and fight back against them. Prior to joining the Texas Democrats, Rose served as the Director of Online Training at the National Democratic Training Committee and as National Coordinator at the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights focused on their Election Protection program.

Hannah Howell joined the Texas Democratic Party as the Voter Registration Director in January. She partners with Democratic activists and community leaders to implement large-scale, volunteer-driven voter registration drives to identify eligible unregistered voters and provide convenient, accessible opportunities to register to vote. Prior to joining the Texas Democratic Party, Hannah led similar statewide voter registration efforts in Arizona and Washington State.

Vaidya Meenakshi Gupta BAMS, MDAyurveda (Gold Medalist), is certified in Nutrition Science and Child Nutrition. She is a classically trained Ayurveda Vaidya and an international repute teacher. She is the founder and director of AyurRoots – Ayurveda Wellness Centre in Plano, Texas. With close to 23 years of Ayurveda clinical practice, she is one of the few holistic practitioners who leads the effort of real integration and focuses on client-centric restorative care.

Vaidya Meenakshi has been a trailblazer and an eminent Ambassador of Ayurveda in the West, teaching, practicing, and promoting Ayurveda. She has been a sought-after keynote speaker at national and international Ayurveda, Yoga, Wellness, and Ayurvedic Nutrition conferences. In addition, she serves on a board of directors for the Global Council for Ayurveda Research USA and the American Association of Ayurvedic Professionals and is vice president of NCCBAM. She currently practices in the Dallas Fortworth area but has clientele worldwide.

In Remembrance – conversation with Indian comedian and actor, Raju Srivastava

Raju Srivastava, is an Indian comedian and actor. He ventured into stand-up comedy with the talent show The Great Indian Laughter Challenge and finished as second runner-up, subsequently taking part in the spin-off, The Great Indian Laughter Challenge – Champions, in which he won the title of “The King of Comedy”.

Raju Srivastava wanted to become a comedian since childhood. He started his career by doing small roles in Bollywood films. He had a part in the Rajshri Productions movie Maine Pyar Kiya and other roles in various movies such as Baazigar and Bombay to Goa. Asha Bhosle, is a household name – an Indian playback singer, known for her versatility, described as one of the most influential and successful singers in Hindi Cinema. In her career spanning over eight decades she has recorded songs for films and albums in various Indian languages.

Asha Bhosle has received several accolades including two National Film Awards, four BFJA Awards, eighteen Maharashtra State Film Awards, nine Filmfare Awards including a Lifetime Achievement Award and a record seven Filmfare Awards for Best Female Playback Singer[, in addition to two Grammy nominations. In 2000, she was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest award in the field of cinema. Boman Irani is an Indian actor, photographer and voice artist who works primarily in Hindi cinema. He has worked in more than a 100 films in his career.

Boman Irani trained under acting coach Hansraj Siddhia from 1981 to 1983, during his school and college days. His earliest theatrical appearance was in Roshni, in which he played a cameo at the Regional Theatre in Versova. He followed this up with serials like Family Ties and Mahatma vs Gandhi, playing Gandhi after the role was turned down by Darshan Jariwala. From our Archives – a conversation with the popular ghazal singer, Talat Aziz Sahaab

Talat Aziz is one of the finest Ghazal singers of India and came across as a wonderful human being – talking with ease and singing along.

Talat Aziz took his initial training in music from Kirana Gharana. He was trained primarily by Ustad Samad Khan and later by Ustad Faiyyaz Ahmed Khan. After the initial training, Aziz learnt music from the Ghazal maestro Mehdi Hassan.

Talat Aziz released his first album in Feb 1980, under the baton of Jagjit Singh. Jagjit Singh composed this album titled “Jagjit Singh presents Talat Aziz”. This was a runaway hit Subsequently, in 1981 Khayyam Saheb, music director introduced Talat Aziz in the classic film Umrao Jaan with the famous ghazal Zindagi Jab Bhi and followed it by Bazaar, with Phir Chidi Raat which he sang along with Lata Mangeshkar. As I go back to the time of the interview, I just have one wish to make like I did then , and that was to freeze the time, to hold on to the time , the era, the Shammi Kapoor Era….the magic continued I am sure in all those peoples lives which were touched by the wand of the legend called Shammi Kapoor… Yes, he happened to be my fav star of all times..I had grown watching his films…and it was a moment out of the blue for me to be able to speak with him.

The interview happened when he was at the fag end of his life..but little did we know then…he was still so full of life. He counted the days of a week that he would be in the hospital for Dialysis and asked me to call him on any of the remaining ones…Great people are great because they have greatness engraved in them…on the scheduled day, he got delayed by an hour as he was busy with another interview, but made it a point to come on the phone to tell me personally how “sorry” he was and that he would be back in an hour….Back he certainly was, apologetic again for the delay ….we have much to learn from you Shammi Kapoor Sahaab and you will always remain in our hearts…always be my fav star of all times…

Shantanu Mukherjee, known as Shaan, is an Indian singer, actor and television presenter. In 2002, he won the MTV Asia Award for Favorite Artist India for best solo album for his album Tanha Dil.

Apart from studio albums, Shaan also sang several other albums songs such as Channel Hits, Bollywood Sensation 2, Club Class, A Reason To Smile, The Ultimate Party Album, among many others. He collaborated with international singers as well. After working with blue for the song “One Love” and singing the theme song (“Shuruaat”) for the movie The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Shaan collaborated with Michael Learns to Rock for his album Tishnagi. Vasundhara Das is an Indian singer, musician and actress. She began training in Hindustani classical music at the age of six under her grandmother Indira Das, who ran a music school on the top of their house. Later, she joined the Lalit Kala Academy, and later studied under Pandit Parameshwar Hegde, her Guru. During her college days, she was a lead singer of a girl band and was soprano in the college choir.
